Now it's not often that I don the lycra and go and battle with those skinny types but as there was no downhill race on and the race was just down the road I thought.......why not! To my surprise I met up with Alex from Rave Racing who decided to try the race too, at least we could hang at the back and have a laugh.

The course was wet and slow and pretty hard, lots of hills including one that went on for bloody miles. This was okay as it was followed by a very very nice and long downhill, it was great fun on an XC bike and I chose this section as a brief relief from the back pain I was suffering. I nailed this section so fast that at the bottom of the steep bank the marshall kept jumping up and moving frantically when I approached, I guess he thought I'd kept missing my braking point .......hilarious.

Yet again the XC boys showed they can't ride down anything steep or technical, even the leaders from the expert category who romped past me on the uphill couldn't do anything to shake me on the technical descent, I could see his frustration as he stomped on the pedals wagging his head from side to side, he was desperate to show me who's boss on the hill exiting the descent .......great fun.

After the 2nd lap Alex felt the pain and dropped out but being a veteran of the Megavalanche I have endured a great deal more pain and continued on. Despite dropping my chain twice and being caught relentlessly by who later turns out to be an old school mate, I crossed the line glad the pain had ended.

One of the Pearce Cycles marshalls I know from downhill competitions came over to tell me that I'd actually come 3rd in the open category, he also said "when I was told there was a mad man in a black top nailing the downhill faster than any other rider I knew it was you"....cool. My result however is a sad reflection on the quality of the other riders as I'm not whippet, get out your turbo trainers pussies!
