Dragon Summer Series
Gethin - Wales
18th June 2005

Race Report by: Paul Mackie

Fist full of air anyone?

Three Rapids were in attendance at this Dragon venue near to Merthyr Tydfil: Bromley, Pickles and myself (Mackie). From the number of vehicles at the bottom of the hill early morning, this looked to be a bumper turnout for this race, in fact there were 230 downhillers sweating it out on this sizzling hot day.

The day started with overcast weather, the first run of the day being the usual sketchy affair over greasy roots and rocks. Having not ridden this course before, the first few runs were a navigation exercise for Greg and myself. Master Bromley, who had course knowledge, was keeping his cards close to his chest as a small sporting wager had been placed amongst the team members to spice things up.

Gethin proved to be a simple course to learn: smooth berms and rises to pump through at the top, a series of tight switchbacks down a steep open hillside, a tasty little root section, and most notably a challenging rock garden made up with some very large stones indeed. These sections were nicely linked up with singletrack which made for a course that wasn’t hard to master but had a few rocky challenges to overcome.

But back to the Rapids…..Team head honcho Bromley was first to go down (the course that is), and clocked a time of 3:31 with no crashes. I was down and had chosen to ride flats on my new ride (Intense Uzzi VPX) after my recent jaunt to Whistler. A moderate time of 3:45 was posted – although I was reminded that I should stick to my xc roots and revert back to the clipless pedals after breakdancing on the flats through the rock garden. Pickles fresh from his superb 5th in the Open Category at Fort Bill NPS, was again out to wow the crowds with his daredevil style, however this resulted in two crashes and a time of 4:05.

Anyone for tennis?

By the middle of the day, the sun was in full force and with the humidity combined to produce temperatures close to 30°C. Insulated with Dainese body armour this meant that we were all sweatier than sumo wrestlers in sleeping bags in a sauna. Keeping the fluids topped up was therefore a high priority. A nice cold beer at the top of the stupidly long push up from the uplift to the start line would have been just what the Doctor would have ordered – if only he not been stuck in the ambulance that had become bogged down in the mud (nice driving dude!).

The heat meant the course lost its early morning slippyness and there were no excuses left for poor times as even the roots and rocks offered plenty of traction. In the heat of the mid afternoon sun honest times of 3:30 for Bromley (19th place), Pickles 3:42 (57th place), and 3:37 for me (48th place), were posted for the Rapids. Not earthshatteringly fast, but a solid day of riding was and no injuries were registered.

Incidentally, four of the eight Rapids now ride Intense frames, so if you are reading this Mr Streber we’re ready for our Factory Team support deal now…!!!

Special thanks to all our sponsors who continue to support our team throughout 2005.
